SHADYSIDE. For genuine cuisine and generous hospitality, Abay in East Liberty is a trendy and authentic spot where you won't go hungry. Indigenous tapestries, stone statues, and paintings tastefully adorn the otherwise plain dining room, where people sit in different configurations of seating, including on the floor and in chairs made by artisans from Ethiopia.

SOUTH SIDE. When you walk through the door of Abruzzi's, you might think there is only seating enough for 10. One should venture further through the entry way and into a large, open dining area that is great for a casual business lunch. Here is a place where Sinatra croons, the silverware doesn't match, the Italian is good, and the service is great ­ what more can you ask for?

SQUIRREL HILL. Famous for its competition with neighboring shops, Aiello's "slings pies" using a no-nonsense approach. The owner, Pete, often chats with customers, and although he's good at small talk, don't let him distract you from the mouthwatering homemade sausage that's used on pizzas crafted with thick dough and smothered in cheese. After all, it's the food that gives this joint its well-deserved place on the list of Pittsburgh's best pizza parlors.

SOUTH SIDE. This appealing enterprise is a totally funky, eclectic, ok-to-be-different coffee hangout. Mismatched seating adds character, and a lamp hanging from the ceiling has several curling irons attached. Such quirkiness is part of the place's charm, and it's hard to take yourself seriously when you're there. Just have fun! N.B. An ATM machine is located inside.

BLOOMFIELD. Embrace the revelry and fun at this family-run Polish eatery and bar. Early in the evening, you'll see patrons devouring heaping plates of stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and pierogies, but as the night rolls in, tables disappear from the stage and live bands take the spotlight. Music ranges from folk and acoustic to alternative rock. On Thursday nights, $1 beers after 11pm are an additional draw.
